The tradition of incense burning was deeply rooted in ancient Egyptian culture and enriched over time through trade with Punt, Arabia, and later India. Whether for religious, medicinal, or aesthetic purposes, incense became very quickly an essential part of their life. Priests, in particular, were masters of preparing incense, which took increasingly complex forms over the years and was accompanied by specific prayers and rituals. This sophistication meant that they possessed an impressive amount of knowledge about the effects of incense burning. The ancient Egyptians associated fragrances with eternal life, more specifically with the vital spark or the breath of life, for the senses belonged to the soul and not the body. Incense was often left in tombs for the deceased to use in the afterlife.
Thoth was the god of wisdom, writing, and magic (heka). As the divine scribe and keeper of sacred knowledge, he played a central role in maintaining maat, the cosmic order. Priests often invoked Thoth during rituals to ensure that spells and prayers were uttered with exact precision and power. Incense smoke was believed to activate and carry heka, the magical force, making it an essential element in these ceremonies. Under Thoth's guidance, the burning of incense was an invocation of divine energy used to uphold maat. Through this sacred practice, incense became a conduit for divine vitality to flow into the mortal realm, reinforcing the eternal bond between humans and the gods.
