Kiite - Japanese Incense

The incense burning tradition made its way into the Japanese culture through Buddhism. One of its main teachings is that ignorance, the primary source of suffering, can be overcome by cultivating awareness. For the Japanese, incense burning was highly sophisticated and was (still is) in itself a ceremony (Kodo), where people gathered to listen to the fragrances. The secret of listening to the fragrances resides in focusing less on smelling and instead more on opening the heart and spirit to the incense. This exercise was believed to awaken and expand the soul, as well as to attune to the rhythm of nature (assuming the fragrances involved are specific to the current season). Try to listen:

 to the divine and seductive feminine of myrrh and its earthy essence,

 to the warmth and sweetness of cinnamon,

 to the vibrant energy of cloves,

 and to the gentle and relaxing touch of lavender.
