For ancient American cultures, like the Aztecs and the Mayans, one of the most important substances used as incense was copal. This resin, symbolizing the blood of the tree, was considered a gift from the gods. In the sacred book of the Mayans, Popol Vuh, there is a beautiful passage in which the first four men created by the gods witness the first dawn. To express gratitude for the birth of the Sun, Balam Quitzé (“Smiling Jaguar”), Balam Agag (“Jaguar of the Night”), Iqui-Balam (“Moon Jaguar”) and Mahucutan (“Distinguished Name”) burn three different kinds of copal towards the Sun. Today, they are known as black, white and gold copal.
